A Timeless Legend of Justice, Courage and Transformation
Neeli is one of the five graphic books in the Yakshikkathakal series, inspired by the ancient Thekkan Pattukal of Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
The story tells the legendary life of Neeli, who, in her first birth, was a gifted temple dancer known for her grace, devotion and extraordinary talent. Betrayed by the man she loved, Neeli met a tragic and untimely death. According to the ancient folk tradition, she was reborn with the divine purpose of seeking justice for the wrong done to her. Through courage and unwavering determination, she confronted the descendants of the man who had betrayed her, bringing an end to the cycle of injustice.
Having fulfilled her destiny, Neeli was blessed with a varam (divine boon) by Lord Shiva. She was transformed into a benevolent guardian deity and is worshipped as Muppandal Amman, one of the revered village deities of South India. Her legend, preserved through the Thekkan Pattukal and the sacred tradition of Villadichan Pattukal, continues to inspire generations with its themes of justice, resilience and spiritual transformation.
