Ponnirathal Katha is one of the five graphic books in the Yakshikkathakal series, based on the Thekkan Pattukal of Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
Born after years of her parents' prayers, Ponnirathal was a beloved girl known for her radiant beauty. After her marriage, she was blessed with pregnancy. During a visit to a remote hilltop temple, she was separated from her companions by heavy rain. A group of thieves, seeking hidden treasure through a ritual sacrifice, deceived and killed her.
According to folk tradition, Ponnirathal was later blessed by Lord Shiva, reborn as Goddess Ponnirathal, and is worshipped as a guardian deity. Beautifully retold as a graphic book, this story introduces young readers to the rich folklore and cultural heritage of South India.
