A Legend of Courage, Sacrifice and Divine Grace

Purusha Devi is one of the five graphic books in the Yakshikkathakal series, inspired by the ancient Thekkan Pattukal of Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

The story unfolds in the prosperous kingdom of Pennarassu Nadu, a land uniquely ruled by women. Purusha Devi, the brave daughter of the queen, grows up learning the values of courage, justice and compassion. When the neighbouring ruler, Chempanmudi, driven by envy over the kingdom's prosperity, invades Pennarassu Nadu, the queen and her daughter stand fearlessly at the forefront of the battle to defend their people and their homeland.

Their extraordinary courage, unwavering sense of duty and ultimate sacrifice transform them into enduring symbols of strength and righteousness. According to the folk tradition preserved in the Thekkan Pattukal and sung through the sacred Villadichan Pattukal, Purusha Devi is later blessed by Lord Shiva and revered as a benevolent guardian deity in Amman Kovils, where her story continues to be remembered and celebrated.

Beautifully retold as a graphic book, Purusha Devi introduces young readers to the rich oral traditions of South India while celebrating bravery, leadership, sacrifice and the triumph of virtue.
