A Legend of Love, Courage and Eternal Devotion
Vadukachi Ammayude Katha is one of the five graphic books in the Yakshikkathakal series, based on the Thekkan Pattukal of Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
Vadukachi, the daughter of King Kannadiya Perumal, fell in love with Kulasekhara Perumal, a local chieftain, after hearing of his noble qualities and seeing his portrait. Though her father repeatedly sought Kulasekharan's consent, the proposal was refused. Determined to unite them, the king sent his army to capture Kulasekharan. Rather than live in captivity, Kulasekharan chose to end his own life. Unaware of his fate, Vadukachi awaited her wedding, only to find her beloved dead. Remaining true to her vow, she placed the wedding chain around him and entered his funeral pyre.
According to folk tradition, Vadukachi and Kulasekharan were later blessed by Lord Shiva, reborn and worshipped as guardian deities. Beautifully retold as a graphic book, this story introduces young readers to the rich folklore and cultural heritage of South India.
